Abort! Abort! Abort!

Yes, a moral issue showing up on the Lib.  However it is far more political than moral at this point.

First, I would just like to point out that previous opinions offered here have been simply my own.  Today, for the first time, I am writing with an accreditation in Political Science.  So you may now give my "educated" opinion the appropriate due.

Can we say, since Roe vs Wade was decided in 1973, that while there have been skirmishes from time to time, the US has been in a state of detente when it comes to this issue?  The American people support abortion for the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.  After 20 weeks, that opinion sharply changes, with 75%  against aborting late term pregnancies, with the asterisked exception of the life or health of the mother.

This long term detente is over.  It is war.

Full disclosure, my personal opinion is that abortion is wrong, but that it was the law of the land, with restrictions.  So, what broke the peace?

Simple.  We all remember the battle royale over the Kavanaugh nomination last fall, right?  With King Kennedy retiring, any conservative nominated was going to be grilled and barbecued, regardless of where they stood on anything.   It was resolved when Sen. Collins (R-ME) announced her support for Kavanaugh, which effectively sealed the deal for him.  No way she would have supported him if she thought for a moment he would overturn Roe.

So, a SCOTUS nominee is confirmed thanks to a pro-abort GOP Senator, but they are freaking out because of Roe being in danger?  Blue states, who, for the last 100 years or more have equated the idea of States' rights with the Confederacy and slavery, have rediscovered federalism, and decided that abortion is legal right up until you take the baby home from the hospital.  Yes, you read that right.  New York started this, but other states followed, including a key purple state, Virginia.   Even if the baby is born, it can be killed without penalty.  The Governor of Virginia, who said that if the baby survived the abortion and was born alive it would be cared for until the mother decided what to do with it, wasn't castigated in the media for that statement, but rather for apparently wearing either black face, or a KKK outfit, when he was in school.  It didn't pass in Virginia, but the battle was on.

Before we talk about the return salvos, let me point out that 51% of black pregnancies end in abortion. There is no other word than genocide for this monstrosity supported by the Democrat party, including the previously pro-life civil rights leaders.  Blacks supporting their own extinction.  Yeah.

Response was swift, and severe.  People were like "wait a minute, what?  You support killing live children?" and so acted quickly to stop that in their states, with very severe laws restricting abortion.  These laws, none of which enact criminal penalties on the mother, nonetheless will have a chilling effect (purposely used understatement) on those medical professionals that perform abortions in those states.(they become criminals, essentially)   Are these laws overreactions?  Yes.  I said it.  But are they any worse on their side of the spectrum than deciding whether a baby that was born alive should live or not on the other?

So now, we will likely have a Supreme Court case that will challenge Roe.  Those shrieking "Supreme Court precedent" should remember that Brown vs Board overturned a half century old Supreme Court precedent. (Plessy vs Ferguson, if you are interested)  Roe was originally interpreted to be only for the first trimester.  Perhaps that would be clarified?  Where are the American people on this?  Not that I think we should govern by polls, but the other side does, so here they are.

Support severely restricting or banning abortion after the first 20 weeks.

60% of Democrats

75% of Independents

90% of Republicans

The article discussing this Marist Poll is linked below.  By the way, the US is only 1 of 7 nations worldwide that allow abortion after 20 weeks.  Also linked is the WaPo fact check, which awarded this statement its Geppetto check mark for being a true statement (1 of 7 nations allowing abortion after 20 weeks)

The rhetoric is heating up, and the question is, can it be toned down, or, will it escalate to violence?  Can we even return to the position that most Americans hold, of allowing abortion in the first 20 weeks?  Just a reminder on who broke the truce.  It was those who support abortion up to and after the child's birth.

How important now was the election of President Trump regarding judicial nominees?  For those who would have preferred other alternatives, including this author,  and pulled the lever for Trump, it was the deciding factor.  There are many things to not like about President Trump, and one wishes that for all the bluster, more would have been accomplished.  No matter.  For 2020, this issue alone may be the deciding factor.
