The age old question.

So, with everything going Trump's way, I just want to go back in time.  Time for the way back machine....

In 1994, the Massachusetts general election for the Senate was very tight.  Senator Ted "Chappaquiddick" Kennedy was in the political fight for his life against Mitt Romney.  Mr. Romney was on a roll in a very bad year for Democrats.   The polls were too close to call, and in an anti-incumbent year for Democrats, that meant a loss.

But then, the bane of moderate Republicans everywhere struck.  In a debate, with not just Massachusetts watching, but the country, Mr. Romney went wobbly.  He went the "I am personally pro-life, but would support Roe vs. Wade".  Of course, most would say that it is a very blue state, and one should be pro-choice.  The perfect trap.  Mr. Romney lost.  Why?  Because, if you give people a choice between a real Democrat, and Democrat-lite (progressive Republican), they will choose the real thing.

Fast forward 22 years.  It appears that Republicans are going to nominate a Democrat-lite, Donald Trump.  He supports nearly every policy that his Democrat opponent does.  It will be enjoyable to watch Madam Secretary try to not support the Administration's trade deals, and walk a tightrope trying to get more traditional Democrats to support her while not alienating the Bernie crowd.  And watch her try to deflect the Donald's attacks.  I am not sure that the networks will be so sympathetic of Mr. Trump once he has the nomination.  Of course, I have said that before, we may know soon.

In a year that should have been a cake walk for Republicans. they are looking at a 50-50 shot at best.  At best.

I wanted to address the bathroom issue that is all over the news.  Does anyone really think that NC and MS are passing laws to discriminate against transgenders?  I don't think so.  I think that there is more concern about sexual predators taking advantage of laws and policies to prey on the vulnerable.  We can argue that, of course, but surely we can cede the point that it facilitates that activity?  What sent me on the rant, was that the City of San Francisco has proposed to ban any business with any state that has a discriminatory law towards the LGBT community.   Of course this as an aircraft from the United Emirates touches down at SFO, and where this global center of commerce has offices in the Middle East.  And while China is not as harsh towards that community, their treatment of civil rights leaves a lot to be desired.  Gays are not killed by the government in NC or MS.  But in Saudi?  the Emirates?  You bet.  I am sure tomorrow that they will announce that they are terminating all leases of international companies from these countries, and all domestic companies doing business there.  No?  Well of course not.  That would be a real stand for human rights.  So much easier to pick on those southerners.

This is no surprise, of course.  Senator Goldwater was right about the Civil Rights Act.  The federal government was going to take away the rights of property owners everywhere, by forcing them to not cater to whatever clientele they liked.  Remember the old days when you would see the sign; "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"?  That is against the law.  The idea of property, used as the owner saw fit ended with that law.  Don't shout about water fountains, restrooms and lunch counters, those were relics of laws, passed by Democrats, to limit business owners on using their property as they saw fit.  Do you see a trend?  Democrats pass laws forcing segregation, Democrats pass laws banning discrimination.  Democrats pass laws that limit your religious freedom.  Who is for liberty?  Well, I think we see the track record.

FYI, Senator Goldwater was supportive of the gay movement way back when the Clinton's, Barack Obama, and many other late converts weren't.  You may think it harsh to say it is okay to discriminate, but  as long as we face the consequences of business decisions, then it should be okay.  I get it.  There is no government control in that.
