He stands alone
Everyone acknowledges that politicians are, shall we say, not always above board?
When asked about all of the broken promises President Clinton had, George Stephanopoulos famously, or infamously said: "He kept the ones he intended to keep." How do you feel about that?
Do we really want them to keep their promises? Do we hold them to account when they don't? Do we really?
Sort of. No. And, Heck no. Do we care, when one actually works night and day to uphold those promises?
I hope so. Because such a creature does exist. More rare than hen's teeth.
You already know who, don't you? Of course, there are actually many in the House Freedom Caucus that are consistent. That stand on principle. But they are a group. And right now, they are getting blamed (Wrongly) because the party can't follow through on its key promise since 2010.
Repealing Obamacare.
This idea was what swept the GOP into control of the House in 2010, in one of the worst shellackings a party in power had taken at the ballot box in decades.
But this post isn't directly about Obamacare.
In a group of 100 Senators, he is not alone, but seems to be visibly alone. He is probably the truest Constitutionalist in the US Senate, if not in DC.
He stood for the people against the party establishment (both parties) on:
Defense spending: actually asking that Congress vote on Authorizing the Use of Military Force against ISIS, instead of using the old (2001, 2003) AUMFs for Al Queda and Iraq. (we aren't fighting either any more)
Judicial Reform: Fair Sentencing, Asset forfeiture. Drug Law Reform
4th Amendment: If we surrender our freedoms, because of the risk of terrorism, then we have really surrendered to terror. Every groping by the TSA. Logging every key stroke of every computer in this nation. Every phone call is logged. Yes, they need a warrant to access it, but how hard is that to get? After all, TERROR! They might even wiretap a presidential candidate and his staff., nope, wait, they did.
Deficit spending: Yes, we want aid to those suffering from natural disasters. No one is against that. But how is it paid for? You see, if the government managed its spending, no one would complain about putting an emergency on the credit card. The problem is, we are not only putting our rent and food on the card, but we are using one card to pay for another. When does it stop? Very few voices are calling this out.
And Obamacare: Okay, I am splitting with him on this. Government provided a benefit, too many want it, too few provide it, and prices skyrocket. Economics. Go figure. I can't stand Senator Graham. He is a warmonger and an amnesty dealer. His bill that will be voted on next week is not repeal.
But. Repeal isn't happening, no matter that that is what EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN has ran on for the last 7 years.
But. With this bill, the mandates (individual and employer) are gone. States can choose how they use the money coming from the feds. They like Obamacare? They can try to keep it. They will go broke, but they can try. They don't? They can craft their own system.
If the GOP doesn't pass this, and Obamacare collapses, who will be blamed? Senator Schumer? Rep. Pelosi? Nope. Trump, McConnell, Ryan, and every Republican politician in the country. They will be slaughtered in 2018, and then Single Payer will be the law of the land, as well as President Pelosi, after the impeachment of Trump and Pence.
Please, Senator, continue to stand alone. We need your voice of reason in the Senate, now more than ever.
Of course, he stands alone. The Pauls always have. I admire you, Senator Rand Paul, and while I agree with you on principle, those who promised to stand with you are nowhere to be found. The battle you seek will not happen.
