On the eve of history
We could be seeing a tax bill signed before the end of the year. Senate GOP coming together to actually get something done. A bonus is the elimination of the Individual Mandate of the ACA. I will be honest, and tell you that I don't like either of the bills. When they use terms like "revenue neutral" or "middle class tax cuts", you know it really isn't reform, and it really isn't much of a cut. But doing a comprehensive reform of tax law (as in starting over, and eliminating the whole thing) cuts out a half a trillion dollar a year industry, and that won't happen. Democrats biggest fear is that as emasculated as this "reform" or whatever it is is, will work, in spite of the GOP's best attempts to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Kate Steinle's killer was acquitted of murder, and even manslaughter. But he was convicted of a weapon's charge. Unbelievable. Was it an accident? Who cares? He illegally possessed, and discharged a firearm. Felonies. If he wasn't an illegal, they probably would have sent him up the river for years. That had to be hard for a San Fran jury. On the one hand, he had, and used a gun. A gun. That most evil of items in the world, (except the internal combustion engine, of course). But, it is a sanctuary city, and they intentionally let him out before ICE could pick him up. Never mind that he stole the gun from a federal officer. yeah.
I was thinking about income inequality and how it is greater now than ever. I wonder if anyone has done a study of the impact of the 40 hour work week on that inequality. If you look at the rich that have built companies, do you think that those guys only work 40 hours a week? Somewhere back in the day, we were sold this bill of goods about how a 40 hour week was beneficial, and that we needed our "leisure" time. Of course this is one of those "benefits" created by the unions for its employees. Condition the workers to accept a "livable" wage for those 40 hours, and give them vacation benefits, and guess what? You have a worker willing to accept his lot in life as a drone. No need to go out on your own, you have enough now, right? That concept alone has limited productivity in this, and every other "developed' country. Do you think that the Chinese factory worker only works 40 hours a week? It is an honest question, this is just a little blog, so didn't spend the time to research it, but I bet they don't.
But what about those that don't work only 40 hours a week? The small business man, the farmer? Well, lo and behold, that seems to be resolved as well. Because they are working hard, and being very productive, they are hit with large taxes. But what about the rich? Well here we are with taxes again. The rich are very connected, and are able to get little cut outs and credits built into the tax code, so that while they whine about wishing they could pay more, their actual rate is much lower than those working their tails off.
I think this new found unity in the GOP came from the Virginia governor's election. I also think that they are staring at defeat in the 2018 midterms, if they didn't get their crap together. That has just got to kill a couple of them, that this is something that President Trump wants.
This will be the only time you will hear me agree with Congressman Pelosi, (D-CA). Of course, I feel a lot better about it now that she has recanted. She essentially said that Rep. Conyers (D-MI) was owed Due Process. I agree completely. We have gone so far out there on Sexual Harassment. it should definitely be addressed, and not tolerated. But this sexual harassment hunt is not too different than the old Salem witch trials. You know. "Prove you are NOT a witch" or today's version, "prove you are not a perv"
What will the GOP do if Roy Moore wins the special election? What if the judge, after having his GOP money pulled, decides on his win that he is renouncing the GOP, and going to a different party affiliation,? Can they kick him out then?
