#OccasionalCortex and other fun stuff.

Just as a reminder on considering higher education, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Green New Dealer, (#OccasionalCortex) and general purveyor of unicorns has an economics degree.  She should sue to get her money back.

She has managed to do something no one thought possible, to get the wacko socialist Bill deBlasio, Mayor of NY, to cry out for capitalism, (though it is the typical progressive crony capitalism)  Why? Because College Grad #AOC thought that the $3 Billion NYC was going to give Amazon could be better spent elsewhere, not understanding that that $3 Billion were tax credits for the estimated $27 Billion in Tax Revenue for NYC and New York State, along with the salaries of 25,000 people, and their contributions to the tax coffers.  I guess that would be a net gain for NY of $24 Billion.  But since I am on the topic of Amazon...

What kind of tax reform did we do where the rate for corporations was reduced to 22% or something like that, and Amazon, under both the old system and the new system paid 0 in federal income tax for 2017 and 2018?  I get the point of reducing the rate, but that is supposed to be in exchange for a reduction of the stuff cronies live on; tax credits, deductions, subsidies, so on.  For the record, Corporations pay zero, whether they have a tax debt or not.  Why?  Because they factor the tax burden into their products and services.  Why not just make it zero, and watch the end result?

Again, I lament the tragedy of the opportunity for reform while just putting lipstick on the same old pig.

People question my libertarianism, as I have supported the need for a wall.  Do I support the Declaration of Emergency?  Not really, I feel the President didn't need to do that, and right now it looks possible that even the Senate may vote to cancel it.  I think that it is unconstitutional under the Constitution, but that the President is right that previous Courts have upheld this law.   What happens next?  Who knows, but it could have been much easier to go to the Mexican government, and tell them that their citizens coming over need to have ID and to use the proper Points of Entry, as the US was going to militarize the border, as there were insufficient barriers necessitating securing the border with a more manpower intensive, potentially violent solution.  Maybe that would have brought the Democrats to their senses.

Universal Child Care has been proposed by Senator Warren (D-MA) a 2020 Dem Presidential candidate.  That is all we need, the State taking your child out of your home and indoctrinating it before it can even say mama.  How will it be paid for?  By forcing both parents to get out and work.  Of course she says that you won't be forced to put your kid in child care, but they said the same about school.

Another thing that has been tossed around is Reparations. This one is amazing that someone who is already supporting a plan, the Green New Deal, which is already going to cost upwards of $93 Trillion (that is the estimate, based on the history of other entitlement programs, one can figure at least twice as much).  Reparations are completely different.  Who do you pay?  How much do you pay?  Who pays it?  You may say "well the Japanese Americans were given Reparations for their time in the camps during FDR's (D) tenure." I would agree, and say that the same applies.  Anyone who was a slave should receive some sort of reparations.

As to the Native Americans, the best thing that we could do as a nation would be to deed reservation land to the individual members of the various tribes.  Too long the Indians have been wards of a less than benevolent Federal Government. We have screwed them all ways possible.  We took their land with minimal if any compensation, made treaties with them and broke those too.  Something needs to be worked out to get the government off the reservations.  Let them have their land to do as they wish.  As the Indians are to this day victims of the Federal government, some reparations are in order, so long as there are no future obligations.

Today the President's former personal attorney testified before Congress, referring to the President in all sorts of unflattering ways.  Of course, he is a convicted liar, having lied to Congress previously and his testimony should be treated as such.  He spoke of how he didn't want to work for the White House because "Attorney/Client Privilege" goes out the window. (Did anyone else see the irony of him throwing the Privilege away for this?)  He also said (after calling the president the usual names for a Republican) that he was so proud to work for the Donald.

And while we watch Cohen worm his way through Congress, and the President meeting in Vietnam with Kim Jung Un, Maduro's government is in its death throes in Venezuela, wondering whether he floats away on a golden parachute to Nicaragua or Cuba, or ends up in a rat hole like Saddam Hussein.  The US should not send any troops into Venezuela to solve this problem, it isn't ours.  Protect the Embassy, but do NOT force the overthrow.  Never mind that thousands are starving and dying every day.  Not our fight.

Oh, and regarding nukes, while not dismissing the critical importance of the Cohen hearings, two nuclear powers are engaged in a near conventional war in southern Asia.  Pakistan and India have been shooting at each other lately.  But how important can that be?
