Now that's class
This week, Senator Bernie Sanders, I-VT, visited Liberty University to speak. Of course, Senator Sanders is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President. He is also an open and avowed Socialist. Liberty University is a christian university, founded by the late Jerry Falwell, of the Moral Majority. This was an opportunity for lots of fireworks. I mean, think about this. If Ted Cruz had gone to an uber liberal college to speak, he would probably not make it to the stage, with one group barring the door, and the other group hiding in the safe room so as to not hear offensive words, like... US Constitution, Republican, Blind Justice, stuff like that. So what happened?
The students attending were respectful, they listened, and there was polite applause. I am not sure what kind of dent he may have made in the group, but it was not a mob scene. I have attended an Ann Coulter speech at KU where there were constant interruptions, protests outside, protests inside, and a police presence. All of that at one of those bastions of tolerance.
I give great credit to the Senator. He didn't try to fake a policy for the group, but he did try to use bible verses to try to sell his message. Luke 22:39-40
And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (KJV)
I am guessing that he was using these verses to indicate that we should be glad to give of what we have to those that don't have. If he were talking about a voluntary gift, as in charity, I would agree with him, but he is not. He, of course, is referring to the government taking, at gunpoint, from the rich. to give to the poor. That is not voluntary.
I may be wrong, (he is a socialist, so I think I am right). If you think I am a little strong on using the term gunpoint, I would point out that the tax code is enforced by the government, and they have guns, and prisons, and can put you there.
Also, as a closing note, I would point out that this is a Senator that would scream separation of Church and State in any other circumstance, but when it suits his purpose, then it is okay. Not surprised, that is typical of liberals.
Again, two class acts, the university, and Senator Sanders. Candidates should do more reaching out to people that don't agree.
