Rage
As I was driving to work today, I heard the news about the clerk in Kentucky being released from prison after being held for contempt for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gays. This post is not about her act of civil disobedience, of which we could discuss reasonably, (like that is possible on any side) what this post is about is that I heard Donald Trump last night acknowledge that the Supreme (singular, Kennedy) has ruled, and that gay marriage is the law of the land. I also heard the press conference where Josh Ernest, spokesman for the President, state that no one is above the law. Every one has to follow the law. Soooo here comes the rage.
Immigration law, not enforced, by choice, ignoring law, yet demanding new law.
Gun laws, not enforced, again by choice, yet cries for new restrictions. Did you know that if a felon were to go to Walmart, and just handle a gun, without asking to buy it, that it is a MANDATORY 5 year sentence, for each gun he touches? Could you imagine if you simply enforced that law on the streets, when you pick up someone for a crime, and they have a gun and prior convictions, the feds can put them in prison for 5 years for each gun. Why aren't federal gun laws enforced?
Defense of Marriage Act(DOMA). Like or hate, it was passed overwhelmingly by both houses of Congress, and signed by a Democrat President. The President chose to ignore the law, and didn't even bother to defend it. Even W. the despised, defended McCain Feingold before the Supremes, even though he disagreed with the law. A president doesn't get to pick and choose which laws he defends.
Before you go and say that, well, DOMA was unconstitutional, I don't necessarily disagree, as my position on marriage and the law is well documented. It is interesting however, that when the Supremes go his way, then that is it, but when they don't, well we, will just go around them. Be consistent.
The Patient's Affordable Care Act. Obamacare. How about the selective implementation of this law? The law is the law, right Josh? No one is above the law? How come the law had the pain delayed past the 2012 election, and more pain delayed in 2013, and 2014? If the law is the law, then let's have it. How do you get around that Josh?
Drug laws? Again, how come the DEA is not focusing on Colorado, and Washington state, where recreational marijuana is legally bought and sold, contrary to federal law? No one is above the law, right? Federal Law trumps State law, right? We can argue about the drug laws in a civilized manner, but the law is the law.
Welfare Reform of 1996. The White House arbitrarily chose to waive certain parts of the law, mainly to get as many people as possible in this country hooked on Government assistance. Sorry, the last part may have been an editorial remark, but that should not distract from the fact that the White House did just waive certain parts of the statute.
Why does no one question the White House on this? Where is the media? These are easy targets, that can't be answered in a way consistent with the railing of a county clerk conscientiously objecting. There are so many more. And no one asks. And you wonder why Trump and the Socialist are winning? The media has ceased to do their jobs, and people are responding.
When there are too many laws, when no one knows whether they are in compliance or not, the law ceases to have meaning.
