Should a tax payment be required to vote?
When this nation was founded, blacks were slaves in most cases, but they weren't the only slaves. Many people were released from debtors prison in exchange for a defined term of indentured servitude. For all the talk of Chivalry, women were considered practically property, with few rights.
Who could vote when the Constitution was implemented? For the most part, it was property owners.
Of course we know what happened after the Civil War. In the South all sorts of requirements were laid out to keep blacks from exercising their vote. Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests (with grandfathered exceptions for poor whites) Intimidation, and other things. Never mind which party was that party. Yeah, you know. (NOT GOP) Of course, to listen today, one would think that we are back to those days, by requiring a photo ID to vote. Burning crosses=Photo ID. That is what they are selling.
Today, a poll demonstrated that Millenials believe that George W. Bush killed more people than Josef Stalin. Even in Michael Moore's wildest fantasy, W. COULDN'T have been responsible for that many deaths. Stalin is responsible for, at a MINIMUM, 30-50 MILLION DEATHS! not including the cannon fodder of Soviet conscripts fighting Hitler. Had the US killed every last man, woman, and child in Iraq, (26 million in 2003) he still couldn't have held a candle to Stalin. This tells me two things. 1. it tells me the kind of education or indoctrination our colleges are providing, and 2. Makes me rethink universal suffrage.
One of the advantages of property owners paying taxes, (or today, those who actually pay Federal Income Tax) is that they will not elect people who will keep giving them FREE! Why do you think Democrats want to naturalize all the illegals in this country? An end to competitive elections, at least in their minds. What is the problem? More and more people will stop carrying and hop on the gravy train, until... I think Margaret Thatcher said something about that.
Of course, we have weasels like Warren Buffet who talk about raising taxes, while having built a tax resistant shelter. What they really mean, is that they don't want any newcomers to their club. Try this one out. Hey Warren! How about a 40% tax on capital gains with no deductions? Crickets.
People who vote have a tremendous responsibility. Without taking the time to learn the issues, study the candidates, and make an informed decision, we arrive at Idiocracy, the movie, become non-fiction. Now people can vote whenever they want, or mail it in. People may have already voted without being fulling informed. What happens if a candidate drops out? or is indicted? There was a time when voting absentee required proof of not being in state to vote on election day. Some issues:
Too many voting? Set up more polling places.
Language issues? Separate the state/local ballots from the Federal Ballot. Citizens are required to have a working knowledge of English. No reason for the Ballot for Pres/VP/Senate/House to require translators, or to be put in multiple languages.
If they pay income tax, let them vote. Skin color doesn't matter. Gender doesn't matter, orientation, or any other "qualifiers". They don't matter. Paying for the government? Does matter. I know, an extreme position. But should it be? No doubt some will throw out the usual epithets, doesn't matter. It isn't even a partisan issue. Or it shouldn't be.
I may have gone off the rails on this one.
